Former Usain Bolt and four-time Olympic gold medal winner Usain Bolt has been charged with possession of controlled drugs after allegedly delivering what was called an "entourage effect" into his ex-lover's house.

The 33-year-old athlete was ordered held without bail at the Southport Magistrates' Court on Friday afternoon.

The court heard evidence showed the drugs were in a jar in the bedroom of 34-year-old Laura Catterall, who has three daughters aged between four and 10, the Herald Sun reports.

Catterall, who had called police from her home at the weekend after returning home from a holiday with former London Marathon Olympic gold medalist and British Olympic Team member Usain Bolt, allegedly put a number of large orange pill containers inside her house while she slept.

They include: three large purple-brown, pill bottles.

The drugs, which weigh 12.5 grams each and were packed in clear plastic plastic bags, were allegedly left in a baggie, but left to "sleep" while the alleged victim slept.

The accused, who also lives with another woman, claimed at her home, Catterall left the pills to her. She admitted to being a habitual user but insisted she had not been "taking drugs for the last three to five years".

Mr Catterall's defence told the court: "I don't like people saying things about me that can ruin me in this case but I am guilty in every respect of what happened to Ms Catterall and my daughter."

She added that she had had the drugs with a friend when they were living together but that he had moved away at the end of last year.

Catterall appeared with other women outside court on Friday.

During the lengthy trial the case became highly emotional as Catterall's defence asked the judge to make her suffer with drugs abuse while she went to court for two weeks to testify against Bolt.

Ms Catterall was jailed for 15 days in August for possessing a controlled substance, after failing to complete an interview with police before she was arrested.

When Bolt was charged after the court appearance the former world champion apologised to his ex-lover but denied it was "anything like the drug deal which really, really ruined my life".

She told the court she believed she did not need to be locked up because "the amount of pain she felt in the eyes of others was very similar to what I felt".

Bolt was convicted and spent the rest of his life behind bars.

Groups representing the most vulnerable U.S. communities, like the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP, are opposed to the new requirements for transgender students.

They say the current rules for sex education in public schools make it difficult for families and students to understand what's going on in the mind of transgender children.

In a letter Tuesday to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and other Trump administration officials, members of groups representing the LGBT community said: "There are parents and school administrators, teachers, psychologists and counselors and even health professionals who are concerned that too many public schools do not fully integrate sex and gender identity and expression into their own teaching or instructional techniques."

The letter called on the Trump administration to revise the standards that govern school and teacher training and policy-making.

"These guidelines are not a replacement for the current policy guidelines provided by states and localities. These guidelines are merely a new beginning in addressing this issue that has gone on for some time."

The U.S. Department of Justice has already issued guidance in response to a 2016 guidance from the federal government that stated schools should provide sex education that does not include "gender stereotypes and misperceptions regarding sexual identity and gender expression."

But, it said, the guidance should not be an "anachronism" that "should be used to address a broader and more complex issue."

"If these guidelines are interpreted as a replacement for state and local laws, or a replacement for current federal law, students and parents will likely continue to receive inaccurate and incomplete information," the memo said.

'A real step forward'

The letter doesn't say how the new guidance will be interpreted by the Trump administration, which is still reviewing its initial draft.
